From the forest to building informatics  | Bühler + Scherler AG

Who says careers are linear? Ramon Domeniconi’s case demonstrates how diverse career paths can be and how useful experiences from a wide variety of fields are. Now, after completing his four-year apprenticeship as a building informatics specialist, Ramon continues to work for our Bühler + Scherler team in Zurich.

After his initial apprenticeship as a forester and subsequent work as a gardener, Ramon decided to take a bold step: switching to the world of building informatics. He made this decision because he wanted to make his daily work more technical and because the field of building informatics offered him diverse perspectives for the future.

The two training programs, forester and building informatics specialist, have little in common. The mere change of workplace from the forest to the office represented a major change. Ramon makes up for this in his free time with more exercise and activities in the fresh air. What he particularly liked after changing careers was the fast pace of his new daily work routine. Building informatics is constantly evolving, which makes the work exciting because you never stop learning.

During his apprenticeship as a building informatics specialist, he went through various departments and learned everything from drawing schematics and testing data points to commissioning systems. At the same time, the breadth of the professional field also presented a challenge for Ramon at the beginning. To perform the job properly, one needs knowledge in all areas of building technology, such as heating, ventilation, cooling and electrical circuits, in order to efficiently link them together. But when a so-called “aha moment” occurs, in which previously learned knowledge can be applied and the functioning of the systems makes sense together, an even more wonderful sense of success arises.

Whether large, multi-year construction sites or smaller projects that he accompanied from the start of planning to commissioning, Ramon saw everything during his apprenticeship. He was particularly impressed by the more compact projects, such as the new factory building of Huber Kunststoff AG. He also wrote his IPA thesis on this project.

Ramon’s development is also a gain for Bühler + Scherler. It shows that career changes are not only possible, but even an advantage: people with diverse backgrounds bring fresh perspectives, a broad repertoire of problem-solving skills and high motivation.

We warmly congratulate Ramon Domeniconi on his impressive apprenticeship graduation as the top student in his year and look forward to shaping the future of building technology together with him.
